Fleet Terms

A glossary of fleet terms for easy reference.

In its broadest sense, telematics is the joining of two sciences—telecommunications, a branch of technology including phone lines and cables, and informatics such as computer systems. Today, the term is commonly used in reference to the telematics solutions utilized in commercial fleet vehicles.

Fleet tracking is a management system that uses GPS tracking to monitor the activity of fleet vehicles and assets (e.g., workers, equipment). It is often referred to as vehicle tracking or fleet management system. A fleet is generally a collection of land-based assets, such as cars, trucks, field workers and powered or unpowered equipment (e.g., trailers)

GPS tracking is the system of monitoring the location of an object (e.g., car, person, animal, equipment, etc.) by attaching a GPS tracking device to it. At its simplest level the tracking device is fitted with a GPS receiver and some way to record its current location (i.e., latitude and longitude) at regular intervals.

Route optimization is the process of determining the most cost-efficient route. It’s more complex than simply finding the shortest path between two points. It needs to include all relevant factors, such as the number and location of all the required stops on the route, as well as time windows for deliveries.

A geofence is an imaginary boundary, or virtual fence, drawn around a landmark or geographical area on a map that you would like to monitor. Geofences can be set to any size. The most effective GPS tracking systems will enable you to receive email or text message notifications whenever your fleet vehicles enter or exit a geofenced area. This helps you ensure your drivers and vehicles are safe and secure by making it even easier to track unauthorized travel, after-hours use, or vehicle theft.

A landmark is a virtual signpost that allows you to mark and quickly identify important locations like your head office, home, or jobsite on a virtual map. These special signposts can help you recognize where your drivers and vehicles are at a glance, making it easier to monitor your fleet and deliver better service.

Mobile workforce management is a category of software and related services that are used to manage employees who work off the company premises, including mobile apps and PC software like Linxup’s GPS tracking system. MWM encapsulates all efforts to schedule, monitor, and track field teams in any industry.

The main points of EU rules on breaks and rest are that you must take:

  • at least 11 hours rest every day – you can reduce this to 9 hours rest 3 times between any 2 weekly rest periods.
  •  An unbroken rest period of 45 hours every week – you can reduce this to 24 hours every other week A break or breaks totalling at least 45 minutes after no more than 4 hours 30 minutes driving.
